NERC issued a Level 3 Alert related to computational loads (e.g., data centers, AI training, and similar large loads) that will require industry attention and response. All registered entities belonging to the TP, PC, TO, BA, RC, and TOP functional groups are required to acknowledge receipt of this Alert and respond, as applicable.
- Acknowledgement of receipt by May 11, 2026
- A formal response submission by August 3, 2026
NERC issued this alert to address emerging reliability risks associated with large, power-electronic-based loads interacting with the Bulk Power System. The alert outlines a series of “Essential Actions” focused on areas such as:
- Modeling and study requirements for computational loads
- Commissioning and operational practices
- Protection, control, and fault response behavior
- Enhanced coordination and communication with large load customers
The actions outlined are intended to close identified gaps in how computational loads are currently modeled and managed, particularly given their rapid growth and unique operational characteristics (e.g., fast ramping, voltage sensitivity, and large step changes).
Next Steps:
- Develop responses and documentation
- Assist with reviewing or enhancing modeling, study, and commissioning practices
- Identifying potential gaps relative to the Essential Actions
- Coordinating internal and external stakeholder responses
We expect this alert to drive increased scrutiny around large load integration and may influence future standards development, so early preparation will be beneficial.
